The film is comprisedof several stories of North Korean refugees residing in the Netherlands, as told by a Dutch activist, a Dutch professor on Korean studies, North Korean refugees and many others in the course of developing the project. By re-narrating the intricate history of the buildings and having dialogues with the three protagonists, I attempt to open different point of view with a new way of critical thinking on the entangled history through the cinematic endeavour.

실험 다큐멘터리 스타일의 영상 “The Defectors” (탈주자들)은 보우스트 막사 건물 중 한 곳에 머무르고 있는 탈북민 최명자씨의 내러티브와 네 덜란드인 백인 활동가 헤이스 베르크만, 네덜란드인 백인 한국학과 교수 렘코 브뢰커와 본인의 보이스오버와 함께 서사를 엮어낸다. 막사의 다층적인 역사를 배경으로 이끌어 가면서 세 명의 주요 인물과의 대화를 통해, 이 작업은 기억과 이주, 정착, 서구 윤리의 문제와 부당성에 대한 관점 들이 교차하는 경계에서 서사화된다. 여기서 막사는 단순한 배경 이상의 의미를 지니는데, 망명과 소속, 침묵과 증언, 과거와 현재, 미래가 만나는 지점으로 등장한다. 이러한 시네마적 실험적 통로를 통해 영화는 관객에게 다각적 관점에서 바라볼것을 제안하며, 무엇이 기억되고 무엇이 침묵 되는지, 그리고 얽히고설킨 역사가 어떻게 재구성될 수 있는지에 대한 질문을 던진다.
