Becoming Stones, 2022 -

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Alongside my solo exhibition, I organised two public events at the space of with the rubbles of old palaces; a film screening of ‘Until the Stones Speak’ (2022, 100mins) by a film director Kyungman Kim and a lecture by Jeongheui Song, a researcher from Jeju Island. Until the Stones Speak unfolds the stories of four grandmothers who survived from Jeju April 3 Massacre. After the screening, a panel discussion followed between the director, Berlin based artists Angela Anderson and Sylbee Kim. Song Jeong Heui, a Jeju researcher, shares her research on Jeju shamanic rituals, both as an academic discipline and a spiritual study and practice. She shared the multidisciplinary nature of shamanic studies, emphasizing its connections to various fields such as agriculture, history, literature, religion, politics, psychology, music, and visual art. She discussed how these rituals are not just isolated spiritual practices but are deeply intertwined with everyday life, historical trauma and cultural heritage. During her lecture, she suggested to look at the ways in which these rituals reflect and influence agricultural practices, embody historical narratives, inspire literary works, and intersect with both religious beliefs and political dynamics. In essence – a study of life itself.
