The feature film Simbang explores the process of spiritual recovery in the aftermath of the 4.3 Massacre by combining found footage taken by American military forces during the massacre with documentation of rituals held at various locations across the island. On Jeju island, “심방” (Simbang; 神房) refers to a shaman. “神” (sim) means spirit, and “房” (bang) means space or room, translating directly into a spirit room or spirit space, thereby evoking a spatial aspect of their beings in connection to the unseen world, yet powerfully sensible through the ritual. The camera follows all steps of the ritual; calling forth gods and spirits, welcoming them both on land and underwater, serving them with offerings, playing music and dancing, communicating with them, purging evil energies from the spirit and clients, and sending the spirits away back to their realm. During these rituals, the Jeju myth’s 18,000 gods and the life stories of the people who died in 1948 come together to weave a history of their sorrow and violence, enabling the processing of trauma. The physical, psychic, and emotional impacts of trauma go beyond the limits of the dominant historical archive and its knowledge.
장편 영화 <심방>은 2021년부터 4년동안 제주도에서 연구, 조사하는 과정에서 완성된 영상이다. 영상은 4.3 학살 이후 제주도 사람들의 영적 회복 과정을 제주굿을 통해 탐구한다. 학살 당시 미군이 촬영한 파운드 풋티지와 제주도 전역에서 거행된 영등굿 (잠수굿) 의식의 기록들을 병치하여 보여준다. 제주도에서 "심방(神房)" 은 무당을 뜻한다. "신(神)"은 영혼을, "방(房)"은 공간이나 방을 의미하며, 영의 방이나 영혼이 존재하는 공간을 의미한다. 심방의 몸은 살아있으면서 영혼에게 는 억울함을 호소할 수 있는 유일한 장소이다. 이들의 몸은 보이지 않는 세계와 연결되어 있으면서도 의식을 통해 강력하게 감지되는 존재들의 공간적 측면을 느끼게한다. 신과 정령을 불러들이고, 땅과 물에서 그들을 맞이하고, 제물을 바치고, 음악을 연주하고 춤을 추고, 그들과 소통하고, 정령과 손님들에게서 악한 기운을 몰아낸 후 정령들을 원래의 세계로 돌려보낸다. 보이지 않는 이 존재들은 의식동안 내내 함께한다. 이러한 의례를 통해 제주 신화 속 1만 8천 명의 신들과 1948년에 목숨을 잃은 사람들의 삶의 이야기가 하나로 어우러져 그들의 슬픔과 폭력의 역사를 엮어내고 트라우마를 극복할 수 있도록 한다. 이 영상은 보이지 않는 것, 말할 수 없는 것 저 너머에서 느끼고 감각하기를 제안한다.
